High School Essay Prompt (Grades 9-12)

Cesar Chavez began as a young person from a farm working family, yet he grew into a leader who transformed the lives of countless workers through his courage and persistence. Reflect on a time when you—or someone you know—had to stand up for what was right, even when it felt risky, intimidating, or unpopular. In what ways does this experience connect to the challenges Chavez faced in his fight for justice? What insights about courage, integrity, or leadership did you gain from his story?

Junior High Essay Prompt (Grades 7-8)

Cesar Chavez was a regular young man from a farming family, but he grew up to change the world. Think about a time when you or someone you know had to stand up for what was right, even when it was scary or difficult. How is your experience similar to what Mr. Chavez faced? What did you learn about courage from his story?

Essay Contest Rules

• Essays must be the original work of the student. It must not have been published previously in any form, including online. Any indication of plagiarism will be grounds for disqualification.

• Essays must clearly address the contest theme and prompt.

• Word count parameters:

  • 7-8th Grades -- up to 1,000 words

  • 9-12th Grades -- up to 1,500 words

• Essays should be typed in English with size 12 font and 1” margins and include a works cited page

• Include a cover sheet with student name, grade, and school.  This information will be removed prior to judging to ensure anonymity.

• Teachers must submit essays by Friday, February 20, 2026 at 11:59PM via Google Form. Each school is allowed to submit up to 5 essays. 

Top essay winners in each division will be recognized at the March 2026 Fresno County Board of Education Meeting.
